GBC Foundation's Vision 2020 Campaign Receives $1.2 Million Gift

April 2012 –
Great Basin College, Nevada

The Elko Daily Free Press reports in its March 28, 2012 edition that Barrick Gold of North America has pledged $1.2 million over three years to the Great Basin College Foundation's VISION 2020 major gifts campaign.

"We see Great Basin College as an important partner in our growth and as an essential asset to the communities of rural Nevada," said Gary Halverson, president of Barrick (Daily). "Our business in Nevada continues to grow and we must support programs that allow us to recruit, retain and develop our people." Barrick has been a long-time supporter of GBC and has contributed to the funding of building projects, such as the GBC Electrical & Industrial Technology Building. Barrick has also established hundreds of student scholarships and funded many equipment purchases. Several Barrick employees serve as members on various boards, including the GBC Foundation Board of Trustees.

"We are overwhelmed by Barrick's commitment to the students and mission of Great Basin College, and by their considerable generosity," said John Patrick Rice, executive director of the foundation (Daily). The Elko Daily Free Press reports that GBC President, Lynn Mahlberg is also greatly appreciative of the partnership between GBC and Barrick. "GBC continues to benefit by the strong partnership we have with Barrick. What is unique about his particular gift is how well we worked together to create a mutually beneficial plan. We were able to better understand how we could respond to Barrick's workforce needs. Barrick was able to better understand how they could leverage our state funding to boost their productivity," Mahlberg said.

GBC's VISION 2020 campaign is focused on generating funds for scholarships, institutional sustainability, emerging opportunities and health sciences. Funds garnered during the campaign will benefit students across the 62,000 square mile service area.
